People, Places and Porsches - Our Club's Sun Valley Tour

Our club had its first joint tour to Sun Valley with the Silver Sage Region over the weekend of September 22-24. Twenty members from The Yellowstone Region signed up for the trip to join with twenty two members from the Silver Sage Region (Boise area) in beautiful Sun Valley.
A core group comprised of Ken, Robin, Jack, Suzanne, Jim, Barbara, Jim, Nancy, Chad and Wendy left from Jackson on Friday morning. The weather was questionable at best, with four inches of snow falling the night before. But the roads were almost dry and the trip through the Snake River Canyon was even more picturesque with the recent snows. Our drive to Sun Valley was uneventful, other than one of our members getting lost in Idaho Falls, the tour leader taking a wrong turn in Arco and a small amount of road construction through Craters of the Moon National Monument. On the CB radio, I could hear one of our members saying “OOHHH mmyyy gosh--my car has never been on such a horrible road in all its life,” during the stretch of road construction. But the car and its owner both survived the ordeal.

After arriving in Sun Valley we had a few moments to relax and shop before we met for dinner at Bald Mountain Pizza. We were joined there by three more club members—Greg Sr., Peggy and Greg along with two members from the Silver Sage Region—Steve and Barbara. Everyone received a special hat commemorating the tour at the dinner. And the evening was very pleasant with lots of good conversation and plenty of food.

Saturday morning (after a quick car cleaning), our group assembled in the Sun Valley Inn parking lot for the beginning of our Tour. We were now joined by all remaining members of our group—Tom, Stephanie, Phil, John and Connie for the trip to the Red Fish Lake Lodge. The weather was picture perfect for the journey over Galena Summit. With the blue skies and snow on the mountains it made for some beautiful pictures featuring our cars in the foreground. We stopped on both sides of the divide for some pictures before getting lost again on the way to the Lodge (this time it wasn’t my fault). Red Fish Lake is a beautiful alpine lake with a group of mountains at its far end that must give the Sawtooth Mountains their name. We joined the Silver Sage Region at the Lodge for lunch. After some additional photos, the group then split up for the drive back to the Inn.

There wasn’t much time for shopping, but Robin somehow managed to stop by every store in Sun Valley (at least once) before the cocktail hour. I also noticed a few other members doing their best to keep the Sun Valley economy humming (especially Suzanne, Wendy and Barbara). We had a better chance to meet the other region during the cocktail hour in the lounge (now totaling 40 strong). The evening dinner was at the Ram Restaurant—one of Sun Valley’s finest. Dinner did not disappoint and was absolutely wonderful. Everyone had a chance to get to know the members in both the neighboring club as well as our own club much better. It really was a very pleasant evening. After dinner we relocated to the lounge for a quick meeting and a big thank you for all that participated.

Some of our members decided to leave early Sunday morning, while some would stay a few more days to enjoy the resort. Robin and I left with a group of cars going back to Jackson as Jim took over the lead for our trip back home; I think we may have set a new time/distance record from Sun Valley to Jackson. I doubt he would have done much better in his Piper Turbo Arrow. Jack also had the chance to clean his Turbo out all the way home (no more carbon left in that engine).

Everyone in both regions had a wunderbar time, not only on the tour, but the food, scenery and friendship was extraordinary. The Silver Sage Region is thinking about a visit to Jackson next summer because of the friendships that were formed. Our club is in the initial planning stages for next year’s tour to Big Sky, Montana—look for the dates and details in upcoming issues of our newsletter. It should be another great adventure. I hope to see all of you on next year’s tour.

We would like to thank Greg Prugh for graciously providing some of the pictures for our web site.
